Narcissistic Personality Disorder

Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is the internal expression of self-centeredness, lack of empathy, and exaggerated self-worth. In addition to the pathological characteristics associated with the disorder, it causes significantly impaired functioning in terms of personality traits. People with these disorders experience difficulties in various areas, including work, family, and social relationships.

A narcissistic personality disorder is one of 10 personality disorders. In these disorders, mental and psychological dysfunction can lead to harmful thoughts, feelings, or actions. Symptoms of personality disorders typically emerge during the late teenage and early adult years.

A narcissistic personality disorder is usually characterized by conceit and arrogant behaviors. They often insist on having things that reflect a successful lifestyle because they believe they are superior to others.

There is no exact cause for NPD. But it may be due to childhood trauma, relationship with friends and family, hypersensitivity in childhood, or temperament. Some researchers suggest that it might be due to the genetics and biology of an individual.
Patients with this disorder seldom seek treatment. Families or loved ones often pressure people into therapy to treat the symptoms of their illness. Patients with NPD often refuse to acknowledge their disorders, and their treatment can be incredibly challenging.

Mental health experts can help you determine whether you suffer from NPD. Psychotherapy involves completing questionnaires and then talking to you. There’ll be a discussion about what’s causing you distress. The focus will be on examining long-term thinking patterns, feeling, behaving, and interaction with others. As well as identifying and ruling out any other mental disorders, your psychotherapist will also rule them out.

Narcissistic Personality Disorder isn’t something to be ashamed of. It’s a mental health issue. Having NPD affects how you behave and how you communicate with others. Sometimes, this is unintentional. The reason lies in a deep-seated sense of insecurity – the feeling that you are not good enough – and the need to be deemed worthy by others. When you receive treatment, you can learn healthy ways to boost your self-esteem and get along better with other people.
